For Diana and her family of four, finding a place to call home was a journey marked by patience, perseverance, and more than a few unexpected turns.
For over a year, Diana and her children were homeless. The family was working hard to change their circumstances. They were saving money and preparing for the day they could move into a home of their own.
Eventually, that opportunity seemed within reach. Diana’s family was approved and preparing to move into one of our Love INC transitional homes. However, after a fire in Laurel left another family without a home, Diana’s family graciously remained where they were to allow the family who lost everything to move in instead.
Our Love INC team continued walking alongside the family, searching for housing opportunities and helping them navigate the application process. House after house presented another obstacle. Some landlords never responded. Other properties were not a fit for the family’s qualifications.
But they kept going. Then Diana came across a home on Zillow. Her family and our team immediately got to work. They completed the application online and reached out to the landlord. As it turned out, the landlord knew Mandy, a member of our Love INC team, and was willing to learn more about the family’s story.
Within a week or two, Diana’s family received the news they had been waiting for: They were approved for the home and would soon move in.
Getting the keys was a major milestone, but the support didn't stop there. Love INC helped the family get their electric and gas services set up and walked through the rental contract with them to make sure they understood the details. Another Love INC team member, Diego, helped translate and make sure the family could navigate each step with confidence.
Our team also helped the family obtain furniture so they could begin making their new house a home. Today, Diana’s family is living well in their new home, building stability and looking toward the future. Love INC still meets with the family once a month to check in, offer support, and make sure they are doing well.
Diana’s family’s story is a reminder that moving from homelessness to stable housing is rarely as simple as finding an available home.
It can take persistence, accountability, advocacy, practical support, translation, furniture, utility assistance, and people who are willing to keep showing up when the first opportunity doesn't work out.
We are incredibly grateful for our Love INC staff who walked alongside this family through every twist and turn. Their compassion, tenacity, and genuine care reflect what it means to put the love of Christ into action.
This is what happens when people come together with purpose and unwavering commitment. A family gets a home, a difficult chapter begins to close, and a new chapter of stability can begin.
